Project Overview
Hi-Tec carried out a large-scale drive and motor modernization for the continuous coil coating (CCL) line at Universal Metal Coating Company.
Challenge / Project Requirement
The line used legacy Siemens 6RA24 DC drives and DC motors. The project reference identifies obsolescence and the high maintenance requirements of the older DC motors as key reasons for the upgrade.
Solution and Technical Scope
The legacy equipment was replaced with Siemens SINAMICS S120 common DC bus drives with Active Line Modules and Siemens 1PH8 motors. A total of 22 drives and motors were upgraded and integrated with a Siemens S7-300 PLC and Wonderware InTouch SCADA. The listed applications included multiple tension bridles, chemical/prime/finish coater rolls and the rewinder reel.
Project Outcome
The project reference reports improved line efficiency and minimized downtime, and states that the high maintenance requirements associated with the old DC motors were eliminated through their replacement. The modernized system also provides PLC and SCADA integration for the documented line applications.
